The HOPE Project

The HOPE (Horticulture, Organic, Produce and Environment) Transition Project is an education programme enhancing the vocational, personal, social and independence skills for young people with learning disabilities, who are moving from school life to adult services (Age 15 - 20) based two days per week, at The Playtrail site, Racecourse Road, Pennyburn, Derry. The programme allows individuals to participate in society through activities that will improve their skills and allow them the opportunity to integrate with others.  Participants have the opportunity to undertake OCN accredited training, providing them with Independent Living Skills and the knowledge to cope with the life changing event of transition. Participants also undertake OCN accredited units in Horticulture.  Here they have the opportunity to grow plants and vegetables and are involved in a plethora of activities including community gardening; allotment maintenance; environmental awareness schemes; personal development: networking and team building. This is utilised to build confidence and aspirations, promote social inclusion and enhance community accessibility.

This project is funded under the Big Lottery Fund's 'Reaching Out - Empowering Young People' Programme.
